Dr Mirek Piechowski

Biography note
Mirek provides professional leadership and coordination for the multidisciplinary team of scientist and engineers at the Meinhardt Building Science Group. His team is typically engaged to provide advise on development of integrated ‘green building’ design solutions.
His expertise is in the thermodynamic analysis, design and computer modeling of thermal systems. His work is focused on developing comfortable, ecologically sustainable and cost effective built environment solutions.
Mirek is also the director of the Centre for GeoExchange and Renewable Energy Infrastructure. The Centre continues on the work initiated by the Four Seasons Energy Program, a Victorian Government initiative to promote GeoExchange technology which provides low cost, renewable energy based heating and cooling alternative for regional Victoria.

Abstract
The Four Seasons Energy Program, a Victorian Government initiative, proved successful and very popular with regional communities in Victoria. It provided regional communities with first hand experience of the GeoExchange technology; renewable energy based heating and cooling system.
The paper reviews outcomes of the program to date highlighting its success, lessons learned and areas of further development required for wide spread implementation of GeoExchange, and other renewable energy technologies.
The paper also outlines commercial opportunities and environmental benefits of renewable energy infrastructure integrated with urban design. It further highlights some of the technical and regulatory challenges facing such developments. The paper also discusses partnership opportunities between industry, government and academia in developing frameworks for commercial application of integrated renewable energy infrastructure projects.
